This isn't a new recording of Hippolyte et Aricie, but a reissue of the one recorded in Paris at the Salle Wagram in , following a wildly successful series of performances the year before at the Palais Garnier. Review - "Not surprisingly, Christie and Les Arts Florissants turn in a splendid and committed performance of Rameau's first opera/5(20).

  Christie’s is also the larger ensemble of the two, though still within the bounds of period accuracy. Johnson, again, opts for Minkowski because of the solo work that stands out, but I find Les Arts Florissants far more involved than Les Musiciens du Louvre in many places, especially the magnificently atmospheric Underworld scenes of act II.

    Zoroastre is an opera by Jean-Philippe Rameau, first performed on 5 December by the Opéra in the first Salle du Palais-Royal in Paris. The libretto is by Louis de Cahusac. Zoroastre was the fourth of Rameau's tragédies en musique to be staged and the last to appear during the composer's own lifetime. Audiences gave the original version a lukewarm reception, so Rameau and his librettist.

    William Christie and Les Arts Florissants invest in this music their Gallic qualities – lightness of phrasing and rhythm, a certain easy elegance – and wholly to its benefit. Paul Agnew's Acis strikes the right tone, tender and poised to perfection in ‘As when the dove laments her love’, elsewhere (‘Love sounds th’alarm’) heroic.
